Karen Rhoda, Ph.D. is dean of the Division of Online Learning. She provides overall direction and growth initiatives for Walsh College online programs. Dr. Rhoda joined the College after 19 years with The University of Toledo, where she was most recently associate dean for the Division of Distance Learning. While there, Dr. Rhoda secured more than $3.2 million in grants and gifts, much of which launched the University’s online degree programs.

Dr. Rhoda‘s bachelor’s degree is from Indiana University, and she also attended Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., as a sociology major. Her Master of Arts in sociology and Ph.D. in sociological foundations of education with minor in sociology are both from The University of Toledo.

Dr. Rhoda has served on the United States Distance Learning Association’s Advisory Committee and was nominated for outstanding leadership in distance learning in 2003. She served on the Ohio Learning Network’s Academic Outreach and Distance and eLearning Futures task force committees and the Ohio Learning Network Catalog Implementation Committee.

Dr. Rhoda has presented at numerous state, regional, and international distance learning conferences. A 2005 paper co-authored on an e-writing center for the Annual Sloan-C International Conference on Asynchronous Learning Networks led to an invitation to apply for the 2006 Sloan Effective Practices Award, Faculty Satisfaction.

Currently, Dr. Rhoda is co-authoring “The Administration of Distance Learning in Higher Education: Benefits for a Changing Society”, scheduled for publication in 2010. Her chapter, “The Role of Distance Education in Enhancing Accessibility of Adult Learners” is published in Best Practices for Adult Learning.

An advocate for dog and cat organizations, she enthusiastically spends time with her Cocker Spaniel, and also enjoys reading and antiquing.

Tom Petz

Tom Petz is the Director of the Division of Online Learning at Walsh College. He is responsible for the daily and strategic operations of the Division of Online Learning, research and development of new multimedia technologies for use in online course, and overseeing student and faculty technical training and support. He joined Walsh in 2003 from an internet company that manages DaimlerChrysler's three main brand sites.

Tom is a 2000 graduate of Wayne State University, with a bachelor of science degree in Computer Science. Tom graduated from Walsh College in 2007 with a master's degree in Information Assurance.

In his spare time, Tom enjoys building computers, programming, playing with technology, sailing, and spending time with his family.

Denise Wardrope

Denise Wardrope joined Walsh College as an Instructional Designer in 2007. Denise has a Bachelor of Science from Oakland University in Human Resource Development (HRD), with a concentration in Training and Development. Her responsibilities at Walsh College are to support instructors in the development of interactive online courses, and to support the Instructional Design team members of the department.

Prior to working at Walsh, Denise worked at O/E Learning, Inc., FANUC Robotics, MSX International (formerly Geometric Results), and Cerner Corporation providing training solutions to these industries with focus on the adult learner. Experiences with these industries have included: training hospital staff on the implementation and use of pharmaceutical software to deliver medications for patients while hospitalized, the operation of industrial robots in manufacturing settings, the continuous improvement of General Motors Quality Network processes to include team and team member procedures and performance among others.

Jason Ragsdale joined the Division of Online Learning as an Online Course Operations Coordinator in 2006. In 2008, he was promoted to Manager of Technical Support and development where he is responsible for ensuring the timely delivery of online course materials and overseeing the technical support team.

Prior to joining Walsh, Jason worked as the Director of Online Learning for Rochester College. Jason has a BS in Human Services from Rochester College and is currently pursing a Masters in Training and Development from Oakland University.

Mark Hartzel is responsible for assisting faculty with multimedia content and supporting students and faculty with technical issues. A 2000 graduate of Macomb Community College with an Associate’s degree in Computer Service. Mark joined Walsh College part-time in 2004 coming from a Medical Billing company providing state-wide hardware, software and phone support and became full-time in 2005.

Outside of Walsh, his activities include dune buggies, softball and camping with his family.

Susanna Sokol joined the Division of Online Learning in March of 2003 as the Academic Technology Specialist for the Division of Online Learning. Susanna's responsibility is to aid students in a "virtually" trouble-free, enjoyable semester. She helps maintain the online orientation handbook and course. In addition, she is responsible for assisting students on a daily basis with their questions regarding online courses.

Susanna is a 2000 graduate of Oakland University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems.

Kirk Krekeler

Kirk Krekeler joined Walsh in 2009 as an Instructional Designer in the Division of Online Learning. He has a Master’s Degree in Instructional Design from Wayne State University and is responsible for assisting instructors in the development and facilitation of their online courses.

Prior to joining Walsh, Kirk worked with BBDO Detroit to develop Chrysler Web courses that train dealership personnel on new vehicles and selling skills. With companies such as ES3, Kirk developed on-ground product training for Chrysler sales professionals, involving 25-city national launch tours. Kirk has also worked extensively with Ford Motor Company developing executive speeches for Product Introduction Shows, Winter Dealer Meetings, and Leasing Seminars; and developing Web-based learning solutions.

Karen Ellis joined Walsh as Multimedia Support Specialist in 2006. In 2009, she was promoted to Course Design and Development Coordinator where she is responsible for the coordination and assignment of instructional materials from the designers to the multi-media development team. She is also responsible for managing the process of procuring textbooks and publisher materials for the Division of Online Learning. She works collaboratively with faculty and online staff in the preparation of online courses and supplemental materials where she helps design effective instructional materials for adult learners.

Yvette Collins joined Walsh College as an Instructional Designer in 2007. Yvette has a Bachelor of Science from Oakland University in Human Resource Development (HRD), with a concentration in Training and Development. Her responsibilities at Walsh will be to support instructors in the development of interactive online courses.

Prior to working at Walsh, Yvette has worked at AT&T as an Instructional Designer developing blended and online training for Credit and Collections and Field Service managers. She has also worked for Sandy Corporation, developing training for General Motors Sales, Service, Business Management and Information Systems. In her role at Sandy, her experiences have included: Project Manager of Training Development, Instructional Designer for Online and Distance Learning training, and Management of the Marketing Support Services Department staff.

Kay Bowles is our Part-Time Online Quality Coordinator. Kay comes to Walsh College with experience as a school administrator and a teacher of computer applications. She is familiar with CMS products such as Blackboard, productivity applications, the fundamentals of quality online course design and pedagogy for adult learners

Kay is working to ensure that Walsh online courses are infused with the quality and dynamics needed to produce effective learning outcomes for students and are in compliance with accreditation standards for the best practices for standards for electronically delivered degree and certificate programs. She completed her B.S. in Business Administration at Wayne State University and her M.Ed. in Instructional Technology at Wayne State University.

Jamie Gardner

Jamie Gardner is our new Online Graphic Designer. Jamie comes to Walsh College with multiple experiences with several companies. She has worked to design web sites, create marketing materials and graphic designs for projects for Auto Trader, Art Van Furniture, Borders, McCann Worldgroup and Crain Communications.

Jamie is working to infuse graphical designs into courses to enhance student learning and produce materials that are compelling to varied learning styles. She is a graduate of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and currently is working toward her M.Ed. in Instructional Technology at Wayne State University.

Curtis Campbell joined the Office of Online Learning in 2007 as the course operations coordinator. He is responsible for semester to semester course activities including planning, preparing, and facilitation of online course models and providing support to faculty and students. Leslie Mallare joined the Division of Online Learning in 2008 as a multimedia developer and programmer. Her favorite part of working at Walsh is creating Flash activities that are used in courses. She has a bachelor degree from Wayne State University and is currently pursuing a master degree in Instructional Design & Technology with a major in Online Learning from Walden University.

Prior to working at Walsh, Leslie worked for VuCom newMedia as a multimedia programmer where she developed training courses and web sites for Meijer, Kmart, Chrysler and others.

Shelley Dronzkowski joined the Division of Online Learning in November of 2008 as a Multimedia Developer. Shelley has a Bachelor of Science from Oakland University. She majored in Business Management and minored in Human Resource Development. She also has and Associate of Applied Science degree from Macomb Community College.

Her responsibilities at Walsh include developing course material using multimedia technologies, successfully enhancing PowerPoint presentations for online delivery, and assisting the director in planning training and meeting opportunites.
